Fur Grass

Well after the fur dried.

That just sounds weird.

But after all the paint on the fur dried.  Still sounds weird, like a PETA protest...

Anyway.

I got the cat brush and started to try and separate the fur strands to make it look more grass like.

See what you think.

It looks better from a distance.  But fairly grass-like.

The table is covered with the dust from the paint as it shakes off the 'grass'.

I think I might do some experimenting with RIT dye and see if that takes better.  But right now I feel like I've sunk enough work (and paint) into this that I'll see how it looks against the house once I've gotten my base.

Which still hasn't arrived.  I am Very Disappointed.

Zorg face.

What do all of you think of the 'grass'?

  1. Um. Maybe as seen from an airplane?
Possibly in small (not rectangular) amounts. In context?

    1. I know. It's not good is it. Too much paint... maybe if I use some water to thin it out?

  2. I see where you’re going with it. I think it needs more shading/variation in colour. Pastels?

Have you poked around you tube for model railway builders? They might have some more grass ideas. They achieve a realism that usually leaves me in awe.

    1. I think some water might take off some of the paint. Give it some variation. I don't have much to lose by trying it.

  3. I see what you mean, and I agree with the above comment: it needs more shading. But at the same time I have no clue in what way you can achieve that, Sheila. Pastels indeed, was also my first thought after reading. For creating my green scenery around my miniature farm, I often use small grass patches, which I bought at the model railway builders. But for having a nice lawn and not too perfect, I guess you have to create it yourself. So, no help from me either, sorry, I wish I knew more to help you.

    1. I've seen some little grass sprouts in the railway section at the hobby store but they don't cover a lot of ground. I'm going to try messing around with some water and see if taking some of the second layer of paint off will help.

  4. Hello, I think it just needs some more work. As you said take off some paint, but not everywhere, to make some color variation, and then let it dry completely. And then comb it further. I think the drying is the most important, otherwise you can't make it "grassy" enough. That's my 50 cents ;-)

    1. Yeah I'm going to play with it a bit more this week. Water and more combing will help I think.

  5. Try placing some garden furniture and/or flower boxes on it just to see if the "grass" looks natural.

    1. From a distance it doesn't look bad. Close up pictures...it needs some work.

  6. Hi Sheila! I think it looks promising! It at least has the variations in texture of real lawns that artificial grass often doesn't have. Try combing it when the paint is still wet so that it doesn't get so matted... and I think the coloring is a really good start! There seems to be some variety in tone from one part to another. If you add a few "weeds" here and there it will look about like my "lawn" does in RL! LOL! Don't give up yet! I think it really looks promising... especially from a distance!

    1. Yeah I'm hoping some water and more brushing will help.

  7. I don't think it's terrible, and there's enough promise there to keep experimenting if you have a little time. I wonder how it might look if you took some sheers to it to give it a "just mowed" sort of look. Does the hubs have a shaver with the different comb attachments?

    1. I'm hopeful with some thinning of the paint that I can make it look better. I'll mess around with it some more.

We've got an electric razor that we use to cut his hair...not sure I want to mess it up with the painted fur. but I could get some scissors and mess with it if thinning the paint doesn't help.

    2. Maybe try the shaving on another scrap piece of the fur. You could have something incredible here with a little more experimenting. I know time is running short so spending a lot of time on it isn't practical, but maybe in the coming year you'll become the "grassmaster", lol! :o) Good luck getting it right for the photos and good luck in the contest!

    3. Yeah, I've got some time tonight to experiment with it. Going to play around and see what I can do.

    4. Oh yeah! One more thing I though you might try on the fur at a later time... The Ranger Tim Holtz alcohol inks in the mister bottles. They dye without adding bulk to the fibers, and you could get some nice variation in color with different shades of green. Blitsy has them on sale right now with free shipping over $29. Good time to resupply. Hugs!
