Bathroom, Stairs and Stove

I painted the shower fixtures last week and this week I glued them to the shower wall.  These are from Kristine's shop on Shapeways.

I knew that I had another cube shelf around somewhere that matched the others I'd be using.  So I spent part of the weekend hunting it down.  I finally found it and my ripple glass so I got to work.

I cut a panel of it to act as part of the shower wall when I get everything glued in. And then I did a quick dryfit of the shower with everything in place.

I'm going to add one more row of tiles to the bathroom flooring than I initially planed to give myself a slightly larger footprint.

I also decided to add some more of the ripple glass to the other three cube shelf.

I started to build a cabinet for the sink too.

It's covered with primer at the moment.  Of course then I dropped it trying to move it so now it needs to be re-primed.  That, I'm sorry to say, is a typical Sheila move.

Jodi had suggested I use some wood strips on my feature wall to give it more dimension and this weekend I decided I would.  I went with raw wood because I liked how it looked.  One of the tones in the coffee table is very pale so I think it works.

Plus I think the raw wood will tie the wall in with the floors nicely enough.  But that was as far as I got with the loft this weekend.

I started to work on the spiral stair for the bookshop.  I wanted it to look more traditional so I used some spindles I'd bought and beads for spacers.

The staircase took most of the day.

I'm adding a railing out of the same cord along with newel posts and then I'll modge podge the whole thing, prime it and then paint it metallic black.  Likely I'll have to paint it plain basic black first and metallic on top. I've noticed the metallic paints don't cover as well without several coats.

While I was letting all the glue dry on the stairs I got started on my stove for the living quarters.

I was going to go with a parlor stove but I wanted something that technically you could at least brew tea on.  So I got most of it glued together.

Then I added some LEDs and the cellophane for a fire effect and glued the rest together.

I was really excited so I took a couple videos.  My husband was playing EA Sports MLB so the music in the background (if you're using sound) is from that.

I want to age it a bit, it looks too shiny and new for me right now.  I think less gleam and a bit of soot maybe.  I'll work on the coal scuttle and tiled base next week.

This was as far as I got.  Well, except for removing the handle from the side since I realized that didn't belong there before the glue dried.  (Very grateful that I figured that out quickly.)

So far I'm pleased with how it's going.  The fact that we're almost into May just hit me.  Time flies.

How are all of you doing?

  1. I'm not as productive as you, that's for sure! You have gotten so much done. That shower and the ripple glass on the cube shelving are both spot on. They look fantastic. The addition of the wood to the feature wall was an excellent idea, and I love the way you've executed it. The stairs are coming along beautifully, and your stove is so cool! (I can't get the video to play, though. Maybe I should try in a different browser.) Great work! You are really cooking! (No pun intended.)

    1. Thanks! I think the issue with the video is my error. I uploaded it as a picture and you have to treat videos differently. I'll have to check it when I get back on my laptop.

I'm excited about the shower. Much improvement on my first attempt a few years back.

  2. Great work at the bathroom, it will be wonderful. Adding some wood strips on your feature wall surely give it more dimension, what an excellent idea of Jodi! Stairs and stove look great too, I love seeing a stove comes alive with a good fire and I also think it will need a good aging ;)! All together: great work, Sheila!

    1. Thanks! I was really excited that the fire looked so good. I wasn't totally sold on the plastic that makes the flames but it works great.

  3. I think your feature wall definately looks better with the wood strip. It makes the colour panels pop even more. The ripple glass cube shelf would look great in a real bathroom. Imagine all the smellies and towels you could store there! Great work Sheila :)

    1. Thanks Pepper! I really like the three dimensional effect of the wood. I've got little bits and pieces to put in the cubes, art and practical things as well.

  4. The shelves and ripple glass will make it a lovely bathroom. I also love how the feature wall looks now. Great work on the staircase and stove! And, did I mention it before? I love this sofa.

  5. The shower and whole bathroom are looking great! Proof of concept - check! I always manage to drop things at critical moments, too, and if it's a good day, I can find them or they are only slightly worse for the wear. If not, the dogs run and hide, lol!

I LOVE the trim on the color block wall! It really does make the whole thing look sculptural and modern! Light wood was a perfect choice!

The stove bash is such a great idea and I love that you are making it light up! It's going to create such magic in the room!

The stairs are looking great and I love your idea on finishing them! That is one fiddly job but you are rockin' it! Great work!

    1. Thanks Jodi! You had such a great idea for the trim. I'll end up doing the interior door frame in that pale color as well so everything will match a bit more. I learned my lesson with angled walls. Always make sure it fits in the space!

Those spindles made me crazy. I got them all on and realized I'd done them backwards. Thank God I used sticky tacky so they came apart with minimal breakage.

  7. Love that rippled glass! Is that real glass? And it's cool with the cube wall. And you did a great job with the stove. That accent wall looks amazing too. I can't believe you took apart the spindle staircase (I think you did anyway unless you're making two.)

    1. Thanks! It isn't real glass. It's some 'water effect' plastic I got from miniatures.com a while back.

Didn't take apart the staircase. I wanted a really bold arty piece for the loft and a more traditional version for the bookstore. I did the loft first so I could practice.

  8. Lots of great progress Sheila, you look to be steaming ahead. The stove looks fantastic with the light! So cool. Also that bathroom is going to be pretty lux. Lucky mini inhabitant.

    1. Thank you! I really love that table too. I was so tempted to use it in another build but ultimately it didn't fit in there.

  10. Love your shower stall and your choice of floor tiles, too!
Also Adore your little stove and think that lighting it up with the flickering bulb gives it a real authenticity!

  11. Finally catching up on all your progress! Wow, there is so much to love! The shower surround is beautiful, I think the tiles really came out fantastic. Love the way you finished them so they have that almost stone colour. And I’m so thrilled to see my shower fittings made it into your build (squee!) Jodi’s suggestion for the wood trim on the feature wall was perfect I love the new effect. I can’t get over how good the design looks! The sofa and the table are gorgeous as a pair, just seeing these elements come together and play off one another gets me so excited for more!

And last but not least that parlour stove is sooo cool! Loved the video! I can only imagine how great it looks in real life!

    1. Thanks Kristine! I was so excited that I could use your fixtures. I've got some for the kitchen too! I need to figure out lights and everything so I can run wires and finish the walls.

I was so worried about that stove but the LEDs don't put off heat so nothing will melt.

Finally figured out how to embed video! Yay me. LOL

  12. Goodness, you have been busy!!! I Love the parlor stove with the flickering flames!!! WOW! And the second set of spiral stairs is looking awesome! I am so impressed that you are making them from scratch! The bath shower also looks amazing! And the wood trim on the wall mural is definitely a stunning addition! I have to confess my head is spinning with the progress on both your projects! :):)

    1. Thank you Betsy! I'm pretty pleased with the stove. The stairs...well I didn't want to pay ninety to a hundred dollars for spiral stairs so I started looking for tutorials. So my secret is that I'm cheap. LOL

This is my first try with a feature wall like this so I'm glad it's working out.
