Aging, Iron & Sink

I didn't want the stove for the shop living quarters to look shiny and new so I found some of my chalk paint and dry brushed it over the black.  The color is called Castle and it gives it a slightly dingier look.  I did the same thing with the coal scuttle too.

I didn't like the decal much and then when I tried to put it on the stove base it ripped and crumpled so I gave up on it.  I found some of my scrapbook paper with an interesting pattern and scored lines in it, then went over them with pencil to make it look more like tiles.  I glued it all down to the base and then put some modge podge over it.

I remembered before I glued the wall guard on the stove pipe that the wall it would hit would be angled.  So I sanded the pipe down to match the roof angle and glued the guard on.  I want to age up the silver of the guard and the handle on the stove top a bit but it'll have to wait a bit more.

I'm not sure where in the living quarters I'll place it but most the angle will likely be needed no matter what.

The next project was the spiral stairs for the shop.  Much simpler, almost plain, in comparison to the Loft stairs anyway.  I painted them with Folk Art Licorice first after I stiffened them up with modge podge and primed them first.

I had a paint that was called 'Wrought Iron' but it was more like a dark grey than black and I didn't like it much.

I had to let them dry for a while because the paint was really thick.  So I decided to start making books.

I bought a kit from LDelaney's Store on Etsy.  It makes 124 books.  I'm cheating and using balsa wood for the pages.  I don't plan on these to come off the shelves really.  It's kind of nice I have a ton of cardboard left from making my roof last year.

So I started with six.  Once I get in a rhythm I'll make more at a time.  Probably until I get sick of making books.

The other project for the weekend was the sink for the Loft bathroom.  I'd started out making the base last week.  You remember. I dropped it after I got it primed?

A thought occurred to me as I was trying to figure out the counters though, and so I set up the floor in the loft to check it.

See a flaw with my plan?

Yeah... the window is a bit of an issue.  So I was thinking of to where I could reposition my sink/vanity.

I think that will work.  I can put a vanity mirror on top of the shelves or against the back of one.

Since I had the loft in anyway I tried out the stair position.

I was struggling a bit with how I wanted to finish the sink/vanity. But eventually I remembered I had a bunch of tile samples and found one that would look nice with the floors.

I had to recut the top twice before I got a good opening (without breaking the surround) for the under counter sink.

I need to find some hardware for it though.  I've got some somewhere.

My high tech method of making sure the pieces don't separate.

But then I painted the bottom portion a nice neutral.

I'll make some towels to put under the sink.

Lots to do still but I find I'm really enjoying the slower pace.  There's a May mini challenge on Instagram going on which is very cool but I don't have such great photography skills that I wanted to participate.  Maybe next year.

I hope everyone else is having fun and enjoying spring.  Happy May the Fourth be with you and Happy Cinco De Mayo!

  1. Great work on the stove, Sheila, dusty and 'used', I like the new tiles at the base, great find!
The new spiral stairs look wonderful. Your first books look fantastic, I wish you good luck, for making so many books as a library can contain ;).
And a flaw in your plan.....what a pity, but you solved it very well. Your bathroom is interesting design, I can't wait to see more of this project, it's nice to follow.
I can imagine that working on a lower pace is so nicefor you, because I feel the same at the moment, while working on my mini farm.

    1. Thank you Ilona! I don't like things that look too new in a house. Maybe one day I'll do something and call it 'move in ready' so I can make everything perfect and clean.

  2. You're flying with your project Sheila. All the elements are coming together well. I agree, the stove looks nicer with a used patina.
You should join the Instagram challenge regardless of how well you think your photography is. It's great just to 'meet' all of the makers on there 😊

  4. You're flying with your project Sheila. I have to agree, the stove looks much nicer with its used patina.
You should join the Instagram challenge regardless of how good or bad you think your photography is. It's nice just to participate and 'meet' all the other mini makers 🙂

    1. Thanks Pepper! I love seeing everyone else's pictures. I just very rarely use my phone for pictures so I don't have a lot on there to post.

  5. The stove aging looks wonderful and I LOVE your tile floor protector plate! That was a great solution because those decals can be so fiddly and often you only get one shot.
The loft stair finish looks great! So smart to make batches of books along the way so it doesn't become a mundane burden!
I love the vanity with it's stone tile top - it looks very modern! And the new layout will be nice so that all the light can flood in through the window!
I know what you mean about enjoying a slower pace - I am still trying to decide if my not working on minis is due to Russ being back home or just because I am avoiding the stair and balcony rail challenges!

    1. Thank you Jodi! Oh that decal practically shredded on me. There was no way it was going to work. I'm so glad the sink came out well. My first under the counter sink.

I'm just enjoying that I don't need to rush around.

  6. I agree with Jodi that your aged stove looks really Fab, Shelia!
I also like the solid stone surround that you've used for the bathroom sink unit, and although windows can often be inconveniently placed, you have managed to find the perfect solution by repositioning your sink opposite to it. This will work out even BETTER when peeping through, providing a clear view of the entire unit including its towels. :D

    1. Thank you! I'm just glad the layout worked with the sink moved. Moving the window would have been a LOT more difficult.

  7. That stove is amazing! It looks so real! Also, very clever solution on the vanity. I think that's a much better location anyway--much harder for a toothbrush to accidentally fall in the toilet. ;-) I have great empathy for you on the books. A few at a time, and eventually they will all be done. The ones you have made so far look very, very good.

    1. Thank you! Oh boy...didn't even think about the toothbrush thing. I've got some around here somewhere too. My first homemade books. I'm glad you like them!

  9. Hi Sheila. Your efforts on the stove are amazing. It looks so realistic. And the new tile hearth is perfect. Your choice of paper and making it into tile is perfect. Everything else is looking great too!

    1. Thank you! I'm glad it looks good. It's been around a bit so it should be sooty looking.

  10. Hi Sheila! Your parlor stove just looks so real it really fooled me for a minute or two! I have lived with cast iron stoves... so I know what they look like! Great work! And the books look great too... I should look into kits for my shelves in Hardwick Hall... so many details still to complete! As for your loft.... I am still not clear about the layout of that kit, so I am constantly trying to place the parts you are showing! The bath area is coming together... the window could be filled part way in with the top section being a "clerestory" window... and that way you would ensure privacy for the residents too! :) The stone texture for the sink looks wonderfully "industrial"! And I just think your spiral stairs are awesome! I sort of like the simpler lines of the one for the shop. I can't wait to see more!

    1. Thanks Betsy! I'm so glad you like it. Especially since you have cast iron stove experience. (I don't) The books aren't hard to do. Just a little time consuming.

The Loft is one of the earlier Creatin' Contest kits. I made another half to it so I could make it close up. But more elaborate stairs will work in it because everything else is so simple.

  11. Lots of little projects coming together for you! I really like the finishes you've added to the stove and the tiled base is so pretty. Its neat to see how the bathroom fits in with the loft, I think you did a great job with the layout. And the new stone countertop looks great! Very contemporary which is fun to see from you!

  12. Stove is great but I love the tiles you made to put under. They look so perfect!
Books - even if they are cheated - looks really good. I think they will make a great effect on the shelves.
I love seeing all your progress.
