Slight Miscalculation

This past weekend I got the Cricut out again and cut the countertop for the kitchen.  It came out really nice.  I was so pleased.

So I did a dry fit of the cabinet lowers and tested it out.

Small problem.

Somewhere along the way I cut the overall width down to nine inches instead of ten.  My husband had a blast saying measure twice, cut once.  This was made even funnier by the fact that any hand tool (or power tool) he has held was only so he could pass it on to me so I could fix something.

But I went back to the drawing board (almost literally) and tried the whole shebang again on Sunday.

This time it worked out.

I tested it on top of the cabinets, holding my breath the entire time.

I think it came out pretty well. I wanted a thick looking counter, to give it a more substantial look.

I wanted to test out how the whole thing would come together and so far so good.

The other thing I did was prime the pieces I got from Shapeways so I could paint them eventually. I went outside every half hour and sprayed from a different angle.  A picnic umbrella screen kept dust and other stuff from getting on them.

I didn't have time to paint them. That'll be a next weekend project.

Kitchen cabinet hardware.

I did cover the countertop with the contact paper though. I went with white, to get a bit more of a contrast. I'll test the whole thing out next week.

I hope everyone else had a great weekend and got lots of stuff done!

  2. Oh, what a pity you made a miscalculation for cutting out the countertop, Sheila, but at the end it turned out wonderful, it looks really great! Regarding to your hubby: MEN *eyes rolls upwards* !!!! I have a partner with, as we say in Dutch, 'two left hands", which means he is not good at all in thecnical or creative stuff, so he is always quite silent when I am busy making minis, hahaha. But when I 'm showing the end result he is very honest and has good, critical comments, so that's makes it equal ;O).
I can't wait to see more of this kitchen, Sheila.
Stay safe, and take care, dear Sheila.
    Hugs, Ilona

  3. Great job figuring out all the widths, lengths and recesses in the countertop, Sheila! You are really getting a great handle on Design Space! I love the layout of the kitchen and the appliances look so good with the cabinets! I think the white is going to be really nice with the tiles you have planned, too!

I also love that you wear the tool belt in the family - Go Girl Power!!! :O)

  5. Hi Sheila! For some reason, I am always So surprised when something I have cut turns out wrong! LOL! (Of course, we always think we measured right, or we wouldn't make the cut.) Ah well! Fortunately you still had more of the wood to make a new one and it looks Fantastic! It looks as though you have maximized the functionality of the small space, and the clean lines of the cupboards emphasize that. The stove top burners look great too. I so look forward to seeing the tiles in place. Keep up the wonderful work! :)

  6. Oh, wow! That is really, really nice. Your counter looks great. Love the stove with the burners. (And do you ever watch "Home Town"? They say, "Measure once, cuss twice." So true!)

  7. Oh no! Still, easily fixed. Just frustrating. And I always find that I could measure ten times and still cut two or three times...
