Lots of Little Things This Weekend

I warned you my list was in no particular order right?

I still haven't felt all that great this weekend.  Though I'm better than I was.  So I did some research on the solar system and telescopes.  But the first thing I did was a little more work on the sink.

I sanded the corners off to give it a bit of a rougher look on the lower frame.

It might not be noticeable immediately but I know it's been done.

I also added the lower rails to the stillroom/laboratory table.

Then I started to make a floor standing candelabra.  For the candles I started with a dowel and cut it into three quarter inch lengths and drilled through it.  I painted them antique white and then used a trick I found on Epbot.  Hot glue for wax drips, painted the same as the dowels.  She used hot glue when she was making her floating Harry Potter candles.

I had a couple wagon wheels which I cut up to use for the candelabra.  I used jewelry findings for candle holders and got everything glued together.  I hollowed out a couple of newel posts and glued one in place.

The other I glued to my second wheel for the base.

I had to lengthen the wire for the bulbs and then I glued both sides together.  I want to add a bit of wood putty to the joint and smooth it out, but so far it doesn't look bad.

I'm also planning on some more wax drips.  I think that'll add a bit more realism to the whole thing.

While the glue was drying I started work on my telescope.  I got a charm from Hobby Lobby to begin with and made a base.

I also made a smaller scope to go on top of the larger one.

Then I added the base to the main telescope.  And the holder for the smaller one.  The glue is drying and probably will take the rest of the evening so I can't show you the finished product just yet.

I started work on my orrey.  It's just in the beads on wires stage right now.  Once they dry I'll get them onto the turning rings.

Funny to think that this was all I got done. But I've got blisters on my right forefinger from all the finger drills I've used and the candelabra took me most of Saturday.

I did route out the second floor for the wires, though I forgot to take a picture.  And I glued some of the second floor front wall together.  Which I did remember to take a picture of.

Oh, the other thing I did was paint the outside of the tower's third floor with antique white to seal the plaster a bit.   I want to add the beams and then more texture to the plaster so it looks more Tudor like.

And I did some research on Magic Brik and how to use it.  Adding glue to the powder mixture apparently keeps it from flaking off.  And it was suggested on the Greenleaf forum that I prep my tower with gesso first to help the mixture stick.  I've got some scrap pieces of the oatmeal boxes so I'll test everything out on them first.

Kristine did some work on the laser printer for me and sent me several doors to use and I'm excited to play with them but I don't trust myself around them until I'm well.  I'll take pictures.

But here's a couple of the Building Inspector, very interested in the box.

So not a hugely productive weekend but not bad for still feeling like I'm half dead.  Husband is in worse shape.  I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow though so maybe I'll get some antibiotics?

Hope everyone else had a good weekend?

  2. Despite the fact that you're not feeling well yet, I think that you've quite some work!! I like the telescope so far, although it isn't ready yet. I would love to see the candelabra, how it will lightened later on.
Your inspector of boxes looks so cute, sitting there with a face like: what's in this box, something for me maybe...??
Take care for yourself, hope you're feeling better soon, Sheila.

    1. Thank you! I'm hoping to get the telescope glued together tonight and maybe a picture or two of the front door in the next day or so!

Tali is adorable and she knows it. She can get away with murder because of that cuteness.

  3. I love the candelabra and telescopes! It's no wonder that things come off the list slowly when you care about making so many detailed and neat things to contribute to the story!
I think the gesso will work great! I'm sending good thoughts and crossing my fingers that the Magic Brik is successful!
It was so nice of Kristine to cut the doors for you - I can't wait to see them!
I hope the doctor visit results in making you put the illness behind you! I have nearly used up my quota of exclamation marks now, but have a great week!

    1. Thank you! I'm excited about the Magic Brik, but I need to do some playing around with it first before I start on the tower. I've never used gesso before but I figure if I follow the instructions I should be okay.

I was so nervous about those candles! I really wanted them to look realistic and I'm so glad they turned out all right!

Kristine's been awesome. I can't wait to show off what she did. Seriously cool!

Wishing you back to normal good health,

  5. So sad to hear you're still battling it out. I hope the doctor's visit gets you some help!
Honestly you say you haven't done much... but making that candelabra must looks like it was quite a job! I love how you've added lights to it. Are they bulbs or leds? I've always stayed away from dollhouse bulbs for the most part but I'm kind of rethinking that. Do you find they get super hot or?
The beads for the orrey beautiful, I think it's going to be a great piece with the telescopes. Really great way to add colour to the space too. Hope you and your hubby rest up and recover this week. I'm sure you're building inspector will keep watch over everything ;) (I didn't even think about her loving the box too)

    1. It's a slow improvement but there is improvement at least.

Thank you! for the candelabra I bought five yellow LEDs. I've found that occasionally the regular dollhouse lights get warm but nothing too terrible. I wanted the candles to look half melted like the flame was below a wax rim so I hollowed the dowel as much as I could and pushed the lights down into them.

I'm figuring on doing one big orrey of the solar system and then a small one of earth and the moon maybe. I've got a bead for the earth that's as big as my sun so it could be something fun to do for moon phases.

Oh, the minute I take anything out of a box she's in it. She's so irritated with me now because the doors are living in the box so they're safe.

  8. Hi Sheila! You are making So Much Progress on So Many things!!! And you are making them mostly from scratch which is awesome!!! I am such a fan of this project... and I love every detail you are making! The candelabra is awesome and the old sink looks very realistic! The Tower is looking more solid with the "plaster" on the walls and when you add the timbers it will look perfectly Tudor!! I have always wanted to make an Orrery.... and so many Magical items.... but my Loooong list is lost somewhere under the other projects ! LOL! I am enjoying your progress so much! I hope you can rest and feel better soon!
