Paint, Trim and Wall Assembly

This weekend was nice. With Memorial Day I had three days off and I spent part of each working on the dollhouses.  My Shapeways order arrived last Monday so I could work on the Loft.

I got the faucet on the sink.  And worked on the lights some more.

I ordered some ceiling plates for the hanging lights and got them attached.

And I found some old tubing for the bathroom lights which hide the wires nicely.

I also managed to get the addition ceiling cut.

Then I started painting the walls.

I had to fill in some of the cracks with wood putty and sand it down before I could paint.  And some of the wood putty is still drying so I couldn't paint that portion.

But I could finish the addition ceiling with the same blue I used on the main house.

It might need another coat.

It looks pretty good I think.

I worked on the bookshop a lot too.  First, and I would have been better off doing this later, I added the 'plaster' to the ceilings.  I used the same paint that I used for the WQRC stucco and used a stiffer brush to make swirling plaster motions.

The circular brush marks aren't completely visible but I know they're there.   The next step was to add the floors.

I used Minwax Dark Walnut to contrast with the trim and the shelves.  The doors pop nicely against it too.

I began to work on the trim while the stain on the floors dried.

This is the crown molding for the first floor.  I had some chair rail which I used as trim for the second floor opening and the opening for the staircase.

I'm using magnets to hold the front to the rest of the shop, and while the glue is drying they're kept from pulling out with some painters tape.

While the crown molding was drying I glued the walls onto the base.

This is why dry fits are so important for me.  My second floor broke part and I reglued, but I didn't get the front pieces perfectly lined up so I need to sand one of them down a bit otherwise the front of the store doesn't fit properly.

But I did get the back glued on. At least partially.

I haven't glued the back of the second story in yet.  I want to add the railings to the second floor first.

But so far so good.

I have to work tomorrow. But I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day.

  2. I love that you worked on such a variety of areas on both builds and yet were able to keep it all organized! That is a skill! I love the faucet! The finish looks amazing with the stone on the vanity! And the lights look nicely polished with the tubing and ceiling pieces! After all these years with minis I am still struggling with how to keep things lined up properly while they dry. I either have rotten luck or these is some essential piece of the puzzle I am missing. So I feel your pain about having to sand the floor a little. I do seem to have better luck with Greenleaf kits than I do with the thicker ply or mdf kits. The floors and trims look lovely, as do the ceiling plaster and painting you accomplished! Have a great short week at work!

    1. For some reason thinner wood tends to warp on me when I glue or paint it. Makes me a little crazy. With luck I'll keep progressing.

You'd never think I'm organized to see my work area.

  3. I totally agree with Jody: you're so organized while you're working on such a variety of areas, very clever, Sheila, I'm sure I would got lost if I was doing what you do ;O!
The finishing of the faucet (and the faucet itself) look great. You've done a lot of work on so many things, the lights and the ceiling pieces are wonderful.

    1. And I feel so unorganized!

I think this is where my OCD actually helps.

    1. Thank you! I'm glad you like it. Lots of work and painters tape to make that feature wall but it was worth it in the end.

    1. Thank you! I don't feel half so organized as everyone seems to think I am. More... trying to do whatever I can with the time I have.

Thank you so much for the books! I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for half scale minis for you.

  7. Sheila I'm so in love with the way you finished the modern faucet!!! It's a gorgeous shade. I'm so looking forward to seeing the bathroom complete.

I always hate the gluing stage of the build. I swear you take the darn thing apart add glue and then it magically never fits back together the same way! Looks like you're well on your way out of that hurdle. The trim below the floor is beautiful and I love the dark floor stain. As people have mentioned your organization of two builds is truly inspiring!

    1. Thanks Kristine! I was so excited to get that faucet. It's perfect for the bathroom.

Oh you and me both. Glue, brace it into place, make sure nothing shifts... pray... It would be easier if I could fit the build in the microwave! But I was pleased the dark stain worked out. I needed a bit of contrast for the floors.

  10. ...sigh.. late...again.
The faucet and sink if perfect and I can only imagine how fab it will look when that and the light come together in the loft.
What do you mean the plaster swirls in the bookshop ceiling aren't 'really visible'? They look like perfect, plaster on plaster on plaster swirls to me :-)
I am amazed how you swap between two such different project so seamlessly - well done.

    1. Thank you Anna! And you're not late. You're fashionable. ;-)

I'm so impatient to get the lights in! I need to get the kitchen fitted out and then I think I'll be close.

Well they don't seem visible to me, as in no one will notice once the ceiling is in place.
