Supports, Roof & Fireplace

This weekend I was really trying to get the upstairs roof supports figured out.  I made a good start on it, got some measured out and cut and tested how they'd fit.  But there's a lot that I need to get done before I can get them in place and the roof glued onto them.

I can't put the supports in until I get the floor down, at least against the far wall, because the supports will rest on top of the floor.  So the binder clip is holding the roof beam to the wall support.

There are a few spots that aren't taking the stain well, I need to sand them down a bit or just add some paint because the glue got onto the wood.

But I did get the fireplace built and stone added to it.  It's just basswood with some balsa for the back of the fireplaces.

Since the upstairs fireplace is supported by the chimney of the first floor fireplace I didn't want to make it too large.  It's big enough for a pot arm and the fire for the stillroom which is what matters at this point.

I think I'm going to leave timbers off the inner walls of the second floor, at least on the front and back walls.  The support beams will add enough visual depth and I don't want to distract from the furniture too much.  I think there'll be a lot going on already.

Speaking of timbers.  I added an X and some cross beams to the smaller gable.  I think it adds to the look.

I can't really do that to the windows under the side dormer yet, not until I get everything in place.  But it feels good to have the front of the house looking nice.

I also glued some of the roof together, the small gable and the larger one.  Can't glue them to the house yet but it's one more step in the right direction.

Wow I really need to clean up my workspace.

But while the glue on the roof was drying I worked on some other things.  The cupboard for the kitchen.  I used Red Mahogany under Dark Walnut.

And I did some work on the candlesticks and the chandeliers.

I need to add the lightbulbs obviously but they look a little bit more realistic to me.

In an effort to keep the Building Inspector out of the house I've put the removable wall and roof back on.

I'm measuring for my base now.  It's 34 inches long and 17 1/4 wide at the moment.  If I want to add a front garden I'll have to make it removable or I won't be able to move the house off the table.

I still want one though, and to make something with water along side the cottage.  It'll take a little bit of thought, but I think it can be done.

In the mean time, a few more things got crossed off the list.

  1. You've done a lot, Sheila, you work so fast!! The X timbers and some cross beams to the smaller gable certainly adds to the look. The cupboard for the kitchen, the new candlesticks and the chandeliers look gorgeous.
I bet that the Buidling Inspector is geeting more curious, seeing the build getting bigger and bigger. But there's still to see one big gap at one side, so more room for getting a nook for the Inspector....hehehe ;O??
Your list is getting shorter, so, well done :)!
    Hugs, Ilona

    1. thank you! Yes, the Building Inspector is Very curious. She likes to sit in the chair in front of the table and sleep there so she can keep an eye on things.

  2. Hello Sheila,
So much progress! I really like the fireplace and I think the X timber detail on the outside works beautifully. What a gorgeous building.

    1. Thank you! I'm hoping I can get something of a base measured and cut for it so I can get things all fixed in place and the tower attached to the cottage.

  3. The house is really coming together. I like what you have done with the lighting -The candles look great. The timber work looks good too. Good thing you measured or you would have to cut a hole in the wall of your house to get it out!

    1. LOL! I know! Thankfully the house is narrow enough to go through a door. Though I am debating bringing it outside at all this year. Have to see. It'll depend on the camera set up and lighting.

I just really want everything to look as real as possible with the candles and all you know?

  4. Getting the ideas in our minds to translate onto the real structure can be a real puzzle, but as always, you solve them beautifully!
I love the newly added "x", it really does bring the entire front of the structure into balance, and brings forth that fairytale feeling!
The hutch, candles and fireplace are wonderful contributors to the narrative and will work harmoniously to bring the first and second floors into agreement. I'm excited to see how the second floor space will be laid out, and for the timbers and flooring.
Have a great week, and I wish you luck keeping the building inspector from getting too curious about what's inside!

    1. Thanks Jodi! I'm really hoping to figure out how to do the flooring and wiring... Maybe if I lay out the floor and glue the furniture to it and lift it up to put the wiring underneath? Yeesh. I'm really painted myself into a corner on this one.

Thanks again! I need all the luck I can get when it comes to the Building Inspector.

    2. I think that could work - and if you can make the floor an actual tray that lifts out, you might even be able to hide some plugs under the floor that your candelabras can plug in and out of as necessary. I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect solution - you always do!

    3. I thought about that, making the whole floor removable. Still trying to figure out how to do it with the fireplace and chimney.

  5. It's so nice to see the entire exterior all together! The x-timbers seem to have been the perfect touch. I really like the new candle 's' sticks, they're very pretty. So are the new chandeliers. How difficult was it to keep the extra 'wax' from seeping into the bulb pin points??
Have you thought about adding the exterior gardens and water feature with magnets? For my last house all the exterior decking and garden space was attached with strong magnets, making it easy to de-attach. You would need a drill to carve out a space for them to sit into. It all depends on the base you go with, but I thought I might offer this as an idea to play with. I can always send you the magnet info if you want. I think I wrote about it on my blog too.
Hope you are having a great start to your week. :)

    1. Thanks! I'm really pleased with how it's looking so far.

The 'wax' wasn't hard to keep out of the bulb pin points, mostly because I was working with the hot glue and going from the edge of the candle 'lip' downwards. I seem to have good luck with that method.

I actually was thinking of that too! That's how I'm holding the removable wall onto the house and the lift away roof on the tower. That way I could get the main house done and add a garden and water feature as I finish them.

  6. The exterior of your house is representing Ye Olde English style in spades!
It is amazing how extra wood trims in the right places, can effectively change and enhance the entire character of a structure. Each additional bit of detail speaks volumes towards your fairytale story, and I LOVE IT!

p.s. I think that your lighting is Stunning - Well done Sheila!

    1. Thank you Elizabeth! I'm hoping to add a bit more to the sides, but I want to get the dormer set up first.

I'm glad you like the lighting, I just want it to look realistic.

  7. It gets better and better all the time. I love the new, very decorative candle holders and the wheel chandeliers. The fireplaces look very good and the exterior with the X timbers is great. By the way, I thank Kristine for the tip about the magnets, which will be very useful for me. Thank you for sharing your inspiring work.

    1. Thank you! I really am impatient to get things going more quickly now that it feels like the end is in sight.

I'll try to remember to put a link to the magnets I bought in my next post. They're super small and really pretty powerful too. Kristine is a genius!
