Can I Be Honest With You?

I really did not plan on getting much done this weekend.  The weather is finally cooling down and today I was going to finally go out and get some gardening done.  I have a lot of weeding to do and I need to make some new flowerbeds for my new peony roots.

By a lot of weeding I mean a lot.  I've got a whole flowerbed that has maybe two flowers and a bunch of weeds because the darn things just took over when I wasn't looking.  But I've got a bunch of bulbs and I was going to get some mulch and cover everything up so the weeds wouldn't have a chance to come back before the bulbs sprouted.

Those were my intentions.  And then I managed to goof up my neck.  The result of which, even after a chiropractor visit, feels as if I've been in a car wreck.  My husband made me promise that if I felt half as lousy this morning as I did Friday night that I'd do gardening another weekend.  After all, he reminded me, its Texas.  We really don't get the good cold weather until the end of October/ beginning of November.  It isn't like I don't have time.  So maybe one of the days I have off near the end of the month I'll do it.

Or next weekend if I'm feeling better.  We'll see.

But the end result is there was no gardening for me today.

So I've been dollhousing instead.

I've gotten the trim up on the edge of the hinged wall and over the hinges.

Glued in the curtains

And got the ceiling beams into the bedroom, and glued the roof down.  See my highly sophisticated method of weighing it down?

You can also see in two of the above pictures that I wired my lamp and got the battery pack hidden inside the table.  I had intended to do the same with the octagonal table in the front room but when I took the lamp out of its packing it was broken.  The bulb holder (whatever its called) came completely out of the lamp so it is no longer a working lamp.  Again, Very Disappointed. I've ordered a duplicate because I'm OCD like that.

But I was getting more worried about the bathroom and how dim it might end up.  So I'm making a wall fixture to go above the mirror and sink.  I've got some thin brass tubing and antiqued brass jewelry findings and some glass globes I bought last year.  I've got some battery operated LED lights that I can wire up and hide the battery in the attic under a box.

I also need some opinions.  I want to add a lamp to the desk under the stairs and I'm wondering what all of you think.  The front room is black and white with pops of red.  So what would look better in the space?  A white lamp with red shade, a red lamp with white shade, a straight red lamp or a white lamp?

I need opinions folks! Help!

  1. Ah, starting the finishing touches.

Obviously, the red shade will darken and color the room it's in, so do you have other lighting that will be enough to compensate for a red shade?

Your scratch lamps look lovely, too! :]

    1. Hmm... Yeah you're right. I don't want the front room to look like the Red Light district.

Thank you! I actually like making light fixtures from scratch.

  2. Straight white lamp.

The finishing touches are looking great. Sorry to hear about your neck. I screwed up mine last April and finally, last month, saw a different chiropractor who got my joint back in place right. I had to spend the rest of the day on my couch with an ice pack on it, but I do believe it's fixed now. Drink lots of water and take aspirin or some other anti-inflammatory.

    1. Thanks! I'm going to be wiring the lamp today and I'd hoped to get some feedback on it.

My husband, sweetheart that he is, found a masseuse that makes house calls and signed me up for a deep tissue massage. I feel like someone beat me up but oddly also a lot better. And oh yes. Lots of water. I'm not allowed advil related stuff because of some other medications.

  3. Add me to the list of necks chiropractors love! You should have seen my neck after I stitched my tiger rug. Not good! I've been staring at some weeds too. My working theory in that my squirrel population will step up and eat them. Yes, I will live in a dream world.

I like the pure white lamp. I had a full size one, and it casts a nice glow.

    1. Oh yes... I can't do a lot of machine sewing these days because of that very issue. So it's short term projects for me only.

Pure white lamp seems to be winning the polls. Which is good. It's pretty and won't be too gaudy in the space.

    1. Thank you! I'm going to go with the all white. I'm excited about the bathroom lights. I think it'll brighten the room up.

  5. I think that your bathroom lights look Great, Sheila and a light around the mirror and the sink is absolutely essential for putting on make-up, shaving, or taking meds in the middle of the night! hahhaha
Which brings me to the state of your neck- I am sooooo sorry that you are currently in so much pain, and yet I have to admire you determination to work on your dollhouse in spite of it. You are one focused lady. And I love the split book roof weight, a Very Clever and Effective solution, Bravo! :D

    1. LOL That's what I thought. Gotta have the make up lighting. There isn't a lot of room on either side of the mirror so the light will go above it. Same effect but hopefully less cluttered looking.

I really have only myself to blame with the neck, I know better than to think it will just go away on its own. But I've been dealing with this sort of thing for ten years and as long as its not unaccustomed activity I can usually muddle through. The dollhouse makes me move around a lot and that always helps.

Focused. Is that another word for OCD? Because that's a flaw to which I freely admit. :-)

  6. I love the white, so I'm glad that you are going with that, and the fixtures you made for the bathroom are going to look awesome! I can't believe that you are so close to being finished with this project - I am going to miss seeing your progress every week! Which leads me to the question: What's next? If my memory serves, you were working on the Aurthur with the beautiful princess papers? I was looking forward to that one, too!

    1. Thank you! I've still got the details on the outside to do and finishing touches. But I'm astonished at how quickly its moving now.

Next project... I'm not sure. Probably I'll go back to the Fairytale house for a bit. But I'm also debating doing something else with the extra kit I bought of the Backyard Bungalow. Like a child's playhouse. The other thought I had was that it would make a great boathouse, up on a pier. But that's a little ambitious for someone who's never lived on the water in her life.

I'm also hoping I can work on the Real Life house a bit and get some organizing of my workspace/dining room done. I really should have a lot more workspace than I do but I'm really cluttered feeling.

  7. Definitely white! gives a much nicer light than a red lampshade..

  8. I have to agree - white lamp purely because the red shade will darken the whole room =0)

  9. BTW, I laughed myself silly at "We really don't get the good cold weather until the end of October/ beginning of November."

You don't know cold weather. Isn't your average low in the winter still above freezing?

    1. LOL Oh yeah I know. When I say good cold weather I mean fifties, planting weather. I'm originally from Chicago and I do not miss the 32 below wind chills we'd get in the winter. Or snow on Halloween and Easter.

I'm in a sweater when its in the fifties and the natives around me are in winter coats shivering. I try to tell them its not really cold but they won't listen.
