What a Freakin' Week!

This weekend things have finally calmed down but this week has been... interesting.  Mostly in the sort of 'oh god oh god we're all gonna die' kind of way.  Not literally, I'm thankful to say.

So bear with me while I explain why I feel like I still need twelve hours sleep and really don't consider that I've accomplished much this weekend.

Monday morning my car died.  On the highway just as I was approaching my exit.  I made it all the way around the curve of the cloverleaf before it wouldn't go any further.  I am extremely grateful that my husband insists on AAA since I'm driving a lot again.

Forty five minutes later a very sweet and polite tow truck driver arrived.  He towed my car down to the dealership since that was the closest place that could deal with my brand of car.  (No one except them deals with Saturns anymore.)  They couldn't even look at it until Tuesday.  Rental car here I come.  And at least I get a day free because I have AAA.

Tuesday I hear nothing from the Chevy people.  But my husband ends up in the emergency room.  Mostly it was precautionary since he was at the clinic but it was a good three hours before they released him.  He's on tons of antibiotics now and feeling better.  But I wasn't thinking about the car then.

Called the Chevy people Wednesday morning.  They looked at the car.  There's some good news. (Not.)  It was not the alternator, nor the tension spring or the serpentine belt.  Something broke in the engine and when it snapped other things broke.  If I want to keep driving the car it would need a new engine.  Fun fact. They don't make engines for that car anymore.  It would be $6500 for a new (used) engine.

My husband and I decided it was time for a new car.  We managed to go five years without a car payment and we were probably due.  But it's still painful.  And he was in no shape to go with me to the car dealer.  At least we had been researching different cars for the last couple years, thinking sooner or later we'd have to bite the bullet and get one.

I am now the proud owner (loan holder) of a new Nissan Rogue.  The car payments start mid September so I'm enjoying the last month of freedom before more intense budgeting begins.  It could be worse, we'd been saving for a while so I could make a down payment and we won't be broke because of the payments.  But I was really hoping to avoid it for a while longer.

Thankfully I've already budgeted for or purchased most of the things I'll need for the WQ cottage.  And despite a lot more sleep I managed to get a few things done.

I coated the floor with satin polyurethane after wiping it down one last time.  Then I put the walls back on to test for fit and added the fireplace and furniture to check for placement.

I'm planning on a small area next to the wall where I can stack wood for the fireplace.  I'll make a small stone wall behind it.

I wanted to see how the candelabras looked in the rooms.  I think they look pretty good.

I'm debating the placement of the candelabra in the kitchen.  The bay window or the table.  I think on the table might look a bit more natural.

Having gotten that figured out (mostly) I began to put stone on the outer walls.  I started with the door and windows.  I used some scrap wood to make a small step and added 'stone' to it.  And I finally caved and stained the door.  Once I have grout on the stone I'll add the hinges and door handle.

This next part took the rest of the weekend.  And I still haven't done the back wall because I'll need to hide the wiring so that will be done last.

The edges of the wall have stone made to overlap the corners once the walls are glued into place.

For the inside of the house, I was thinking of doing some small beams in the corners to warm up the effect of all the plaster.  At least in the kitchen.  In the bedroom I'll start working on the paneling for the walls and extending it to the ceiling.

I'm still debating trying to make a door and doorway to the bedroom next to the fireplace.  I'm not sure.  I'm leaning towards not.  I want to have a bar system to keep the shutters closed against weather and a wall might get in the way of that.  We'll see how it goes.

I hope everyone else's week has gone more smoothly than mine and that you're all having a great weekend.

    1. Thank you! I'm grateful the weekend didn't have any insanity. Next weekend I'm hoping to paint the stone and grout it. Then I can get a few walls together. Hopefully.

  2. sheila, I can't stop admiring how proficient you are with creating these stone textures with egg carton!!! apart from everyting else, of course! I hope the coming week will be a smooth one...

    1. Thank you! The stone I used is only partial egg carton. Some are the molded cardboard from around toner catridges and computer parts. The texture is really great on them.

I hope so too! I'm tired of the rollercoaster.

  3. I wish you a more relaxing week this week! And that your husband is better soon! The cottage work you've done is very impressing, especially with so much on your mind. a place to stack wood for the fireplace is a great idea, and the candelabras look great in the room.

    1. Thanks! It's mostly work craziness this week which I'm used to. I was just relieved to have all the 'stone work' mostly done.

  4. The stonework is looking great. I am really liking your stained door with the knot-tree. What are you thinking for the ceiling ?

    1. Thank you! For the ceilings on both floors I want exposed beams. For the kitchen and bedroom I'll put cross beams and match them with braces on the exterior and do tongue depressor woodsies for a wide plank look in between them. I'll try to whitewash them and age them with 'smoke' especially in the kitchen.

For the second floor I want to do something similar with the ceiling only the exposed beams with need more angles and 'support' for the roof. It should be interesting to look at at least.

      I hope!

  5. Oh what a week! Hope hubby is feeling much better!
Boo for car payments, but yeah for getting in and driving with no worry that you might not get where you're going!
The stone floors and walls look wonderful, and I bet the candelabras are going to provide a nice amount of authentic looking light for the rooms. The door is amazing, and I can't wait to see it all dressed up in hardware.
Have a nice, boring week! :O)

    1. Thanks, he is. Antibiotics are a lovely thing!
Yeah I know. But we had five years without a payment so we were sort of due for one.
Thank you! I can't wait to get things painted and some actual 'building' done on the main cottage.

    1. Thank you! He is doing better. With luck he'll be back to work tomorrow.

I'm really pleased with how the stone looks. Can't wait to get it painted sealed and grouted.

  7. It never rains; it pours. I hope you like your new car lots as if you are paying for it, you might as well love it. Cars are a big expense for just getting us around from A to B, but for many of us they are a necessity I guess (we’re in a small town and relying on the bus would be nearly impossible and take up half my day). And with a new car, expenses for repairs should be a loooong way off! And hope your husband gets better quickly. Xx

    1. It really does! And yeah, I shouldn't need any repairs for a while so at least I'll have some peace of mind to go along with the car payment. He's doing better, getting referred to a specialist.

  8. I love the stonework, though I do think the floor looks too clean.

I hope your husband recovers quickly, and that you're enjoying the new car, even though it comes with payments.

Big hugs from me for the rough week. :)

    1. Thanks! I agree, both the floor and fireplace need to be aged a bit. I want to be sure of my placement before I start on that. But some watered down black paint and white glue to make it stick should help with the kitchen floor.

He's getting better, slowly. And we've got a referral to a surgeon so hopefully that'll give us more information as to the cause. Love the car, so much safer on the highway, just wincing at the payments.

Hugs back. I know you're having a lousy time too with work so let's hope things get better for the both of us.

  10. Oh Heavens! You have had a busy week.... and You have done a Lot! Your stone work is looking Awesome! You are so brave to add so much paper stone... it can take a long time to attach! As for the door between the rooms... what about a curtain instead? They might not have had separating doors in a small cottage. And I agree that the candelabra probably should be on the table... that would be where they need the light to see what they are doing! I am sorry you had such an alarming week.... but at least you will have a new car for a while! And I hope your husband recovers quickly!! :)

    1. It was busy. But at least it's over now!

Thank you! It did take a while to adhere, but thankfully seems to have stayed where I put it. I'm not sure about anything dividing the rooms. I'll have to leave it for a while and see how I feel about it.
