Paint Samples

I decided to get some of my siding scraps and paint them the two primary contenders for the siding color.

The pictures aren't great but they will give everyone a better idea of what the paint would look like on the house and how it will show on the siding.

With these it's much easier to see what Brae meant about the detail of the siding disappearing with the darker color.  I still love how the blue pops against the white.

These are chalk paints though, and I can't seem to find the same colors in regular paints.  I wonder if I took the bottles to Home Depot if they could mix up some paint samples for me?  I'd like to get some of that paint that has the primer in it since I've noticed paint tends to seep into the wood quite a bit.

The colors are Folk Art's Home Decor chalk paint in Nautical (dark blue) and Cascade (teal).

One last look at the paint on the siding, against the trim and stonework.

Any more opinions?  Or suggestions for paint matches that aren't chalk paint?  I think if I found something that's a semi gloss the detail of the siding might come out more.

    1. Thanks Erin. Keli said she liked the blue too. And I love how the white pops against it. The lap siding doesn't show very well with it though.

  2. I like the teal. I prefer the lighter color purely because I find it more welcoming. - Carey, the friendly FoE

  3. They are both pretty, but I still prefer the teal to keep the siding detail. :] I'm sure Home Depot could match the color you choose. If you go with the lighter and change your mind, it's easy to repaint darker...no so much the other way.

How about painting up some poster board cut to match your walls if you want to see a larger section?

    1. Thanks! I don't know that I need a larger section, though that is an idea to keep in mind, but I did want to see how much detail I'd lose of the siding with the darker color.

I'm thinking I might go and get both of the colors in sample sizes just to see how they look in a semi-gloss paint. The flat chalk paint really makes the details disappear I think.

  4. I still like the color of the blue, but I do like how the teal shows the detail better. Sigh.

Maybe you can find something in between, in a semi-gloss.

    1. That's the exact problem I'm having. I love the blue, that pop against the white is amazing. But you can't see any of the detail. The teal is pretty but I'm not in love with it.

I'm going to go to Home Depot and bring my samples and paints and see about a semi-gloss and whether or not that will show more detail.

Maybe if I get a poly finish in semi gloss and paint over the chalk paint? I could get an idea of how it would look?

  5. Home depot can colour match anything!

I like the dark, but then use the teal as an accent (door, accessories, furniture). Both are very pretty colours. It's a tough choice, but I would incorporate the left out colour no matter what! (In my humble opinion;)

  6. I was wondering about that too! If I can get the blue to show the siding detail then the teal would make a very sharp front door.

    Thanks!

  7. I think what it's going to boil down to is which is more important...the pop, or the detail.

    1. Yeah, I want to see how the semi-gloss works out.

  8. Hi Sheila. I prefer the lighter colour myself, but it's up to you. Do you have to paint it now? Maybe if you could stew over it a bit, you may find you prefer one colour over the other. I also wouldn't go semi-gloss as it will show all the imperfections more, but again, entirely up to you.

    1. Well I need to paint the siding before I add it to the house. But I've got some time before I have to do that.

  9. I'm wondering what the colours would look like in natural light...the dark blue is gorgeous and rich. I imagine it would look different outside, with the sun shining from above and casting shadow over the profile. The teal is also lovely but doesn't contrast enough with the stone and trim for me :0)

    1. That's a good point thanks! I'll have to try that and see. I might not be able to take the whole house out but I can manage one wall.

  10. Hi Sheila, love the navy! I'm sure by now you've gone to Home Depot and got the colours. I've even had them match a fabric sample, so you'll be in good hands.
What if you added a wash of pigment or something to make the siding pop with the navy? I don't have a lot of experience with this but I always see other miniaturists aging or adding dimension to their projects with a light wash of colour. Maybe it would darken along the siding ridges to create dimension?
Can't wait to see what you choose! :)

    1. Thanks! I actually haven't gotten to go to Home Depot yet, that's in the cards for tomorrow at lunch.

I was thinking about that... not sure if I want to age this house or not. I'm debating it.
