2019 Creatin' Contest

I've been stalking Miniatures.com for sales and new stuff. Mostly because I have a request for another Christmas 'lantern' and I want to work on it, which requires supplies.

And while I was looking around I came across this: Serendipity Shed

It's described as 'Charmingly compact but packed with charm, the Serendipity Shed offers just enough space for creativity without cramping your creative space.'

I like the double doors, though I'm not as thrilled with the slanted roof.  And the windows are cute.

The footprint is small, it measures at: '13 1/16"W x 10 7/8"H x 9 1/4"D (plus optional 1 1/2"D front step)'.  Which is nice considering how big I ended up making 2018's kit.

Fran turned it into a shed, which is very pretty.

I like the contrast of the wood and white.

When I look at it I'm reminded of old storefronts.  If I do the kit maybe I'll make it two stories, or three could be fun, depending on the ceiling height.  Like an old brownstone/shop with living quarters above it.  But I don't want it much bigger than the original footprint.

Have to think about it some more.  I'll probably end up buying the kit, just for fun, even if I don't do the contest.  And Miniatures.com just sent a 15% off coupon to my email.

It's like they Know!

Hope everyone has fun with this kit.  I can tell it's one of those that everyone will come up with something wildly different.

  2. Oh, I like this one because I want to make a store. I'd just have to figure out how to hinge the front. Tempting.

    1. Thet's what I was thinking too! Or use magnets to stick it on. That's what I did with the cottage

    2. Oh yes, magnets, that's what I did with my bakery! That's a good idea. I used a hinge on the castle and it's hard to cover it up (although swinging the front wall back and forth did give me great pleasure because it worked so well - although embarrassing to admit).

    3. Where do you buy your magnets? And what size? Thanks so much! I am going to put a roof on my restaurant with storage space for food and I want to be able to remove the roof, so I want to do it with magnets. But I bought ones from Dolls House Emporium years ago, and I wondered where you buy them in the US.

    4. I got mine on Amazon... they make some in different sizes or you can buy a ton in the same size. I used magnets on the WQRC and they worked wonderfully.

    6. I ordered those! I am sorry for all the questions, but what did you use as metal on the other side? Thanks so much!

    7. Oh my pleasure.

I actually used the magnets on both sides, making sure they would click together was a bit of an issue but once they were glued in securely they're great.

  3. Oooh! I look forward to what you make from it. I've wanted to do a store for a long time (in half scale, of course). I like the doors, too. I see some excellent possibilities for you here.

    1. If I do the kit for the contest then I've already got some things percolating... but I'm not sure yet.

  4. Oh, Sheila, I bet they knew that youre looking at their website... ;O! This kit has so many possibilities for lovely creations, a shop, or maybe even a Japanese facade for a tea house with a peekview into the hall only.....you can change it in whatever you want!

    1. I'm curious and I think it'll be fun. I don't want to do anything nearly as elaborate as the WQRC but something with a little footprint could be fun.

  6. Whatever you end up doing Sheila, I have no doubts that it will end up 2 to 3 times BIGGER than what it begins as! ;D

    3. LOL I really don't want a large one this time. I'm thinking build up, rather than out. I'm running out of room!

  9. Happy New Year Sheila. What a gorgeous kit, full of possibilities. Sadly it is crazy expensive getting anything shipped from the US to AUS so I will have to make to, following along with what you all get up to.

  10. I was just thinking about what they were going to do for the 2019 kit and here it is! I like that it is smaller, because goodness knows us mini addicts are running out of space! I did a little potting shed for my aunt one year with a Houseworks kit they used to sell. I am glad they are offering a small and affordable store type kit again! I may just buy the kit and stash it as I usually do, but since I still have two Street Of Shops kits giving me the guilty eye, I probably won't do the contest again this year. I know you'll come up with a unique and ingenious idea and keep us glued to our screens as always!

    1. You're so right! The first thing I thought was 'Thank God it's not huge!' If I can keep the footprint small I have the perfect place to put it.

  12. As always you're on top of all the mini news! I'm so looking forward to seeing what you do with this! Especially after seeing you complete the exterior of the WC I could see you doing something fantastic with this. Especially if you stack a bunch like you mentioned and go more old school shop. I've always loved the Lawbre Chessington Plaza and this gives me a bit of the same feel. But being so small it's hard to really know what can fit into it.

It definitely sings storefront to me too. I love that it could be a very small project. But I agree the silly slanted roof has got to go. I really disliked that on the Craftsman cabin.
I got this commercial chiller from Elf miniatures I'd love to use in a scene. Maybe here? I think if I do it my challenge would be to make it modern... Oh boy, this is bad. I've got to finish my big house!

No matter what happens I'm excited to see where you go with this! When I saw it I immediately thought of you and your style!

    1. You could do a little juice bar? Something very simple and streamlined so you don't feel pressured. That's what's nice about something small, you can work on it in your lap while hanging out with people. And if you're not having fun what's the point?

I didn't mind the roof on the Craftsman because it was taller to start with but even then I added height so the short wall was livable.

I wouldn't want this one any wider, but maybe an inch or two deeper, so I could inset the door and have bay windows? That would be fun. Have to think about it. I love the double doors.

    2. Yes! If I do it, it will just be a little fun little shop or cafe to display a couple things. Or heck maybe a faucet store, I've got a lot of those kicking around now.

Love the bay windows idea, you did a great job of swapping your windows on your last kit too.
This really is a piece with big possibilities. Well done HBS!

  13. Looks like a fun kit! I have been kicking around the idea of just a "He Shed" instead of a "She Shed" I have a few miniature tools and odds and ends that I dont know what to do with..
