Bed Curtains/Drapes Pleats vs Panel

I'm hoping for some feedback if all of you have time to look.

I tested out the pleats on the teal fabric.  And while I like them, they take some of the pattern away from the fabric.  I'm not sure I like that.  But if I do a simple panel, with a slight drape to it, maybe sew a some gentle folds into them we should see the pattern but give the drapes some fullness.

I think a plain straight panel won't look realistic.

What do all of you think?

I do like the fabric against the wood of the bed though.  I think you all were right about the heavier curtains.

  1. Fabric itself and it's colour are perfect. I really wish you stay with this idea.

But you are right, both versions lack of something. Maybe you can try making one or two pleads in the middle of the panel, something like on this photo you showed in previous post: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iZVCQn3vZN8/W9EhYLXk7PI/AAAAAAAAK9k/ULq1SkkcUGQXcy0qnxFniN6ycNP36NzhQCEwYBhgL/s1600/955acf48d4499dd532f3b46e154ff626.jpg

    1. Yeah that's my thing too... I need some middle ground. To make them look like full width curtains but without loosing the pattern.

  2. The fabric looks very difficult to work with! It would be great if you could just get a slight wave to it.
If not, could you do a combination of pleats and straight panels? So we would see the design on some panels and then on others it would be hidden in the pleats? Maybe by adding this material to the bedding you've already made? Some of your inspiration photos show it used for the curtains and bedding.

    1. It's a synthetic so yeah, it's not the easiest to deal with. Keli saw it on Instagram and suggested pleats at the corners and a bit more flat in the middle so we see the design. Which is similar to your idea. I'm thinkin I could use it as a bed skirt so we get a glimpse of it under the lace, if I shorten the sheet a bit that could work.

  3. I went back to your previous post to see the beds. I rather loved the second photo which shows wide pleats where you can see the design. My friend Goldie who is an experienced miniaturist, uses aluminum paper underneath the fabric folds. Could be good for this fabric.

    1. Hi Drora! I really liked being able to see the design too. I'm going to hunt up my aluminum foil and see what I can do.

  4. Hi Sheila! I think the curtains in those days would not have had pleats! I like the more open look of the pattern... soft drapes and partly "closed" panels would be my choice.... they pulled the curtains closed to keep the warmth in and the drafts out... so perhaps she has only opened them part way....? I look forward to seeing what you come up with! :):)

    1. Hi Betsy! No, I think those 'formal' pleats showed up a bit later, so I'm going to work on the tower a bit more today and then see if I can do some looser folds to give the appearance of full width curtains while keeping them open around the bed.
