Staining the Built Ins

Happy Easter everyone!

Hope everybody is having a good weekend.  I had Friday off but I was lazy and went and got my nails done instead.

Yesterday and today I worked on my built ins some more.  I did my bricks for the hearth and the back of the fireplace.  I did inch long bricks and about a third of an inch wide because I wanted them to look a little more substantial than regular bricks.

I didn't want to paint the bricks until I had the wood stained so I got that done today.  I used the Rustolium American Walnut stain and so far I like how it looks.  Once everything is dry I'll add some poly and then work on the bricks.

I'm not sure about the color for the bricks, but I'm thinking a brownish red?

But here's what I've got so far.

I did the window seat built in as well.

My only issue with the stain is that the bronze handles and knobs I bought might blend right in.

The other project I worked on is a cabinet for my farmhouse sink.  I love this style sink and I can't have one in my real house.  But I have to make a custom cabinet in order to use it.  It's a little rough right now but it'll work once I get it polished up.

And that is the extent of my accomplishments for the weekend.

I also got to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Patriots Day.  My husband also brought home Rogue One but we haven't watched it yet.  From what I've heard of the movie I'm not sure I want to.

Hope everyone else is having a great weekend.  Talk to you soon!

  1. I love the stain color.
Good choice on your brick sizing, smaller ones would have looked out of place against the tiles. Yes to dark reddish-brown, but that's a tricky color, be sure to paint a test sample on a piece of scrap egg carton and let it dry to make sure it's going to look good, before you paint the bricks.

All those movies are on my to-watch list. I rented Lavalantula this weekend. I love me a bad B movie. Have you seen the trailers for Valerian and City of a Thousand Planets? It's coming out in July, I want to see it in the theater in 3D.

    1. Thanks! With so many different woods it's hard to make it look fairly uniform. But oh yes to the test of the paint. I'm probably going to have to mix something up if I can't find the right color in the store. Plus I need to age the back of the fireplace so it looks like there have been actual fires.

Oh yes, we've seen that trailer! Looks amazing. Our big one to watch the preview over and over is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Looks just awesome.

    1. Thank you! I like how it came out. I think the trick will be making sure the bricks don't blend with it too much.

  3. Hi Sheila! I think that your built in unit is looking GREAT! and the stain you've chosen looks authentic for a Craftsman style bungalow. My favorite thing though is the Farmhouse sink unit- I absolutely LOVE IT and can hardly wait to see the rest of what your planning for it.
Keep up your momentum, but also try not to mess up your new manicure!

    1. Well the manicure is more like those dip nails that are powder over your regular nail? I have such awful nails a regular manicure is wasted on me.

Thanks! I'm excited about how it came out. And I'm hoping the farmhouse cabinet looks a bit better when I've got it finished. I need to make some cabinet doors for under it. Or maybe a little curtain to hide the under the sink area. Haven't decided yet.

  4. I am joining the "great stain" party! It automatically makes me think Craftsman and built ins, and yours are coming along so nicely! I am looking forward to pillows on the window seat. Great sink unit, too!

    1. Thanks! I'm really relieved at how well it turned out. I still need to sand and do another layer of stain on the mantle but that won't take long.

  5. I agree and would go for dark reddish-brown for the bricks. I take it you will be putting a fire in there, or something that will visually break up the colour? It's looking lovely Sheila :0)

    1. I am planning a fire there and hopefully a small firescreen that won't detract from the tilework. I'm also planning to add something to make the wall of the chimney look sooty.

  6. I think the stain just elevates all the pieces, and it really compliments the tiles around the fireplace! Picking stain is one of the things I struggle with - it's so hard to find the best colour. Love what you've picked!
That sink looks so good! Did you make the sink basin? It's one of the nicest miniature ones I've seen!
(And yay for getting your nails done! I always feel invincible when mini-ing with gel nails haha)

    1. Thank you! I was really arguing with myself over the stain but I like this color. I need the floors to be a few shades lighter and a slightly different stain so I might try to mix them next time.

I didn't make the basin, I got it off of Shapeways https://www.shapeways.com/product/YNFBCBA6U/miniature-doll-house-kitchen-sink-b-1-12?optionId=60519424&li=ostatus

Oh yes, something to protect my nails is indispensable when I'm mini-ing
