Look What I Found!

So I was trying to get some ideas for the new Creatin' Contest kit and did a search for a 320 square foot tiny house.

You will never guess what I found.

The kit is listed on Miniatures.com now which is cool.  And it's on its way to me, which is even cooler.

I like the big picture window and the little porch.  I'd love to do stone half columns for the porch and a stone wainscoting around the house.  Give it a craftsman look.

I'm thinking I might raise the roof a bit (woot woot - yes I'm a dork).  So I can add a true loft for the bedroom.

I'm guessing that this is the wall they talked about bashing so it's not enclosed if you don't want that.  It says the roof is lift off, which is great.  I'd like to hinge this wall.

I'd love to be able to hinge this wall somehow too.  Not sure if its feasible.  It's mostly because I want to be able to take pictures from every angle.
Some stone wainscoting will jazz this up.

So I was thinking of all this stuff and looking on the internet.  And my search turned up this:

Looks familiar doesn't it?

Especially given the little hint picture from the blog.

I can't find any pictures of the inside.  Though the site the picture comes from is for Tiny Houses so that offers some hints but no real information.  The picture is the thirteenth entry down.  Unfortunately the link in the entry is no help.  But look how pretty the wood trim is!  And the little wooden eaves along the flat roof.

I'd love to find out how they did the inside but beggars can't be choosers can they?

I'm thinking of trying to do something a bit retro inside.  Still debating about a full kitchen or not.   I've got a couple of Kris's kits for a couch and chairs and they'd be really cute because they're not cookie cutter and neither is the house.

I stole the picture from Miniatures.com since I bought the kits from them.

It's the same couch Nancy made last year, it's so cute and I think the couch and chairs would be really cute.  Not sure of my colors though. I'm thinking earth tones with turquoise maybe.  I'm also thinking of doing a potbelly stove for heat rather than heat vents like the house has central HVAC.

And I'm not sure about stairs with cabinets built under them or a little ladder.  I really need the kit to arrive so I can do a dry fit and play around with my ideas.  Sadly, the mail just came without the kit so it won't be arriving today.

I spoke too soon!  The kit arrived.  Not by my regular mailman which was a bit of a surprise but fine by me.  So I spent a little time putting it together.

It's not complicated.  Altering it might end up being a little difficult but it shouldn't really be too hard, as far as I can see.  Hinging any wall with a window in it won't work though because the flat roof slots into the windowed walls.  It's good support but it puts the kibosh on one of my ideas.

See what I mean?

That little ledge is the edge of the flat roof.  It's not a bad thing, but I can't easily hinge one of the walls.  At least not in the way I thought to.

And there are a few issues with the kit that have to do with how it was packaged.  Check your trim and window pieces carefully.  This is what I ended up with for a skylight.

And the two larger windows were broken as well.

As well as the door.

They're all things I can fix with glue and some wood putty to fill the cracks but I shouldn't have to.

Oh well.  Work with what we've got right?

Hope everyone else's kit did not arrive with broken parts and you enjoy success with your builds as we all begin!

  1. It's a cute kit Sheila and will be lots of fun seeing yours come along. It's a shame those pieces are broken. You should contact miniatures.com and get replacements. It should be packaged better so breakage doesn't occur.

    1. If I can't fix the skylight I might have to do that. I'm going to try that first. I could take the frames being broken, but I can't glue that plexiglass and I'm going to need to find some new stuff to cut to size.

  2. They will replace the broken pieces if you tell them what happened.

Mine arrives tomorrow! I've got nowhere to put it, because my studio is a mess and I've not been feeling well enough to clean it. I think I'm finally on the mend though, and now I have motivation. Not today though, I ran over to the office yesterday morning to grab the stack of bills in my in-box, I'm working at home this weekend to get caught up.

I love that picture you found of the tiny house. I'm still pondering what I want to do on the exterior, but I'm pretty set about the interior.

Having four walls is great, but you're right, one of them needs to be hinged, for picture taking. Maybe we should try a slide out wall like Brae has done in her last couple of builds.

What I did in the last one was not glue the windows in, so I could take pictures through the window holes. It worked okay, but the shots I could get were limited.

    1. Funnily enough, I've got tons of ideas for the outside but the inside is a bit up in the air. I'm trying to figure out the best floor plan at the moment.

I think if I wasn't keeping the roof removable a slide out wall could work pretty well. The only issue there is the walls don't rest on a foundation, the set up is like the last kit, they go down around the floor. And with a slide out, I'm not sure how much detail you could put on the wall.

I wondered how you managed to get such great pictures of all the walls! Genius.

With this one, at least there's space between the floor and the 'ground' to put wiring. So that's something.

Glad to hear you're feeling better! Working from home can really suck but at getting caught up is nothing to be sneezed at.

I've emailed them regarding the broken pieces so I'm hopeful that new ones will arrive eventually. I've got a different door I want to use so I'm not too worried about that, but the skylight was killer.

  3. I found this link about the design. No interior photos, but there's the layout they used. :]

It's a cute kit. I have an idea but on the fence about building it. Good thing we have some time still. :D

    1. I like the layout they used but I'm not sure about having the kitchen right off of the door. I'd have to mess with the window and I don't know if I want to do that.

Yeah I've got it taped together and played with furniture in it, but I haven't done anything else beyond window shop ideas.

  4. Funny, I looked up the photo and it really is virtually the same. I got mine yesterday. I doubt if I will enter the contest though.

    1. What's really funny is in that same search I found something that looks a lot like the 2015 kit.

Can't wait to see what you do with the kit even if you don't feel like doing the contest.

  5. Wow! I thought that was the kit at first! That's a pretty cool find. My kit arrived yesterday. I'm not allowing myself to open the box until some of my "real" work is done. You know, the stuff that pays the bills. I look forward to following you down this path as well. I love how differently everyone's mind works! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

    1. Oh yes, bills. Yeesh. My job generally gives me weekends free thankfully.

I'm excited about the kit, just trying to figure out the floor plan.

  6. I like the kit and I know that you will make it look Extra Special because that is exactly what you did with your NOLA project!

    1. Well we can hope. I don't want this to be as elaborate outside. But I keep thinking about tiny houses and how storage is set up in them.

  7. Oh gosh, I hate that your pieces were all broken! And that is so funny that you found that real-life version!!
